Rocktail Bay - scuba diving snorkeling and leatherback turtles

Rocktail Bay Lodge adjoins the Maputaland Marine Reserve in South Africa. The lodge offers scuba diving, snorkeling and the famed leatherback turtles. In addition it offers some of best surf and fly fishing in South Africa.
Few parts of the South African coastline are as unspoilt and secluded as the area in the vicinity of Rocktail Bay. There are about 30 kilometres of pristine and undeveloped coastline around Rocktail Bay. The bay received is named after a trawling ship, the Rocktail, was wrecked offshore.

Scuba diving - South Africa
Great scuba diving is available offshore. The ocean is ideal for snorkeling in search of tropical fish. Flippers and snorkels are supplied by the lodge. You can enjoy strolls along the deserted sandy beaches, excellent surf fishing and fly-fishing and swimming in the warm Indian Ocean.
The surf fishing in this area is reputed to be amongst the best on the east coast of South Africa.
Nature walks through the coastal forest and grasslands, or drives in open 4x4 vehicles to Black Rock and other localities, will enthral naturalists and photographers. The spectacular Lake Sibaya is only a short drive away.
The cycad forests and the Hippo Pools can also be visited. In summer, nocturnal explorations of the beach in search of egg-laying turtles can be arranged.

We have our own "Big Five" -- leatherback turtles, palm nut vultures, Buiton's skinks, lion fish and Zululand cycads.

Birding at Rocktail Bay
Birding at Rocktail Bay is excellent and a large number of typical coastal species occur, including green twinspot, green coucal, grey waxbill, and purple crested and Livingstone's louries.
Natal robin and the jewel-like emerald cuckoo frequent the forests, while the marshy areas are home to pink throated longclaw and rufous bellied heron.Various waders frequent the shoreline.
Accommodation is in 10 wood 'tree-house' chalets raised up on stilts into the forest canopy, each with a wooden deck and private facilities. There is a thatched pub, lounge and dining area. An inviting plunge pool also awaits your arrival.
